Characters

Reflection: Make a block is like creating a function in coding. If you don't code it's essentially a way of condensing instructions. Rather than say grab the hose, turn it on, and spray the car I can just say wash the car and you'll understand. For a computer you can explain that washing the car means grabbing the hose, turning on the water, and rising the car and in the future you can simply say wash the car.

If you wanted to repeat a command in several places making a block would be helpful. For example if different buttons did the same thing I could use a custom block and save myself from typing the same code multiple times

Week One Debug Reflection

To debug I would always run the program twice before looking at the code. By doing this the problem was easier to see because it was repeated. If I were helping somebody debug I would run their program repetitively before reading through their code while they explain what each chunk should be doing.

Moving Race: Scratch Project #2

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/38702494/

Reflection:
Animation was done through a series of sprites which was surprising. I thought the images would be manipulated but instead new images called costumes replaced the images to animate things.
Being lead step by step made the program easy to pick up and understand.
I feel like the more freedom people are given the more they are allowed to develop their own skills.
I feel most creative when left to my own devices.

Peers' Binary Code

HTML Tutorial

1. I want to learn how to password protect a page.
2. I want to learn how to add images.
3. I want to learn how to write scripts and link to other pages.

1. I learned how to format bodies.
2. I learned how to set the document time.

3. I'm concerned on how to make websites look clean and be easy to read.

Other Culture Study #6

My struggle to recreate famous architecture.

Number Four Rug Design

Binary Video 3-2-1

Binary solves the need for thousands of volts to be sent through a computer.
Voltage cannot represent digits one through nine because the adder may misread what the number is.
Binary makes sure that our computers get the number correct, but they are longer and harder to send.
I don’t understand his fascination with the number two.
I don’t understand what caused the fuzziness he was talking about.

I want to know if things like the adder can be improved so that faster systems than binary could be used.

Eliza

I did not find Eliza to be humanlike and her responses never made actual sense. Her responses were poorly made and she would sometimes take exactly what you said and just merge that into her sentence. If she wasn't so dismissive and had a wider variety of responses to direct questions she would seem a lot more human. I expect that computers with emotional words will not make me think of it differently. Even if Eliza responded with phrases that how she feels about what I said, I would not think that she is human. Computers could perhaps work like Google and directly answer questions based off keywords however there is a long way to go before we give computers a mind of their own.

Google

As Google grew more popular the creators put sponsored links in the search bar so that they could make some money through advertising. This quickly started making lot's of money for them and eventually they needed coders and techs. Now, Google needs to keep expanding into new fields with their new found growth. This is difficult because a company that gets too big will be impossible to manage. Another problem they face is the sheer amount of competition searching for a weakness in Google in order to claim a slice of the search engine profit. In order to counter this Google scouts colleges to find young workers who will keep Google ahead of the curve. Google works by sending GoogleBots to every website. These bots find every URL and place it in an index based on keywords. When people want to search Google opens the index with those keywords and finds the appropriate sites.

Bead Loom Picture

Unfortunately, I made a mistake and added one more bead than I needed. Check out the site at: http://csdt.rpi.edu/na/loom/bl/beadloom.html

Native American Cultural Project

1. Native American bead work was known for its beauty and for the mathematical skill needed to construct them.
2. A key concept we are learning is how the Native American arts display common mathematical skills that are used to this very day.
3. Bead looms are based off of four-fold symmetry.
4. The shapes are basic and made of lines. There are four shapes that are centered around a central axis.
5. Embroidery, Plains Indians, Shoshone Beadwork, Buffalo Hide Drum, Navajo Rug.
6. Reflection Symmetry is when an object can be reflected perfectly over a singular line running down the center of a object or form.
7. Many Native Americans used a base four counting system. Their tepees had four poles and they occasionally offered prayer to the four winds.
8. The picture displayed is a rug based off a sand drawing. The sand drawings were used for healing where a healing man would create a drawing and then brush it off at the end of the day.
9. Four-fold symmetry was also used to decorate clothing such as the heavy wool jacket displayed on the page.
10. Four-Fold Symmetry #5 depicts a bead loom.
11. The creation of the bead loom isn't fully documented but it occurred long before Europeans reached the Americas.
12. These designs decorate clothing and make fine pieces of art.

Communication

I text more than any other form of communication. The second most would be Snapchat which is still completely shadowed by how much I text people. I rely on technology is very heavy and I might feel lost without my phone.

Computer Scavenger Hunt Reflection

During this activity I felt that I was great at finding specific information such as plane ticket prices. I could improve in my ability to find more vague items like flyers from local art events.

FINAL Computer Buying Project Reflection

After completing the project there are several things to look back on. First, I learned how to cross examine computer specs. Before I looked only at brands, software, and graphics card. Now I know where and how to pull the information of each model as well as how to compare them. Secondly, I learned how to use a price range to find a computer that will give you the best value. In a world where computers are needed more than ever, getting the best one you can is critical for both work and private use. A problem occurred when trying to find a price on the MacBook Pro. The problem was that the price was not in clear view when I tried to find it. I soon realized that the cost wasn't fixed as features could be removed or added. The default price is what I used in my presentation with a cost of $1110.

Computer Buying Reflection

Working with my partner was a fun experience. The work was easily divided and so far everything has been finished on time. With another full class we can probably finish or nearly finish the project.

Wordle About Me

Introduction

My name is Ryaan and I'm a sophomore in high school. This blog is meant to hold all the assignments for the Computer Applications class. I chose to enroll in Computer Apps because I've used computers and technology since I was young and therefore the class interested me. Outside of school I backpack, run track, and play basketball. Additionally, I also like to sail and I'm working my way to earn a LSA license when I'm old enough. During the spring I work on the ground crew of small airstrips to help launch and land gliders.
